This will also be an opportunity to learn how to clip/top line and gain some valuable information and knowledge for county fairs that may include dairy cattle as part of their round-robbin event as well as tips and pointers that may be used at jackpots. This will be a wonderful activity to as it will open 4-H’ers eyes to an often misunderstood and unique species in our region of the state as it is not only local clinic that will reduce travel time, but well below half the price of the clinics offered out in the Central Valley. The point of contact is Peyton Jeffries and her contact information is on the flyer.

Saturday, May 28th Participate in All Star Project

Hello Everyone!

My name is Blake Abercrombie and this is my 10th year in 4-H. I am doing an Allstar project this Saturday in Tres Pinos. My project benefits a new non-profit in town called Cooper’s Calling. Cooper’s Calling is a therapeutic Horse riding facility for children with disabilities. It will be opening later this year in Tres Pinos, Ca.

I spoke with Bailey Rianda who is the founder of the organization and asked what she needed done. She mentioned a section of barbed wire fence that needed to be taken down and then re-wired using barbless wire. This fence surrounds the building and Bailey is house.

I went out and surveyed the fence. It is about 310 feet of fence in the shape of an “L” that needs to be replaced. It is currently a five strand barbed wire fence. I will be removing the barbed wire and then using the existing T posts and wooden posts to restring it with barbless wire.

Because we are working with barbed wire, I am asking only for Senior members. Bailey is also putting a list of chores together for people who attend that morning, but aren't needed to build the fence.

Thank you,

Blake Abercrombie

4-H Updates

Hello 4-H families,

We have some exciting events coming up and changes to our 4-H program.  I would like to share with the 4-H community.

Enrollment fee changes.  We voted at the council meeting on June 26, 2019 to increase the enrollment fees to help offset the additional cost of the program.

2019-2020 Approved Enrollment Fees:

New Youth Membership (regardless of date joined):  $70.00

Adult Volunteer Membership (renewal or new):  $24.00

                Youth Membership Renewed between 7/1 – 8/31:  $70.00
                Youth Membership Renewed between 9/1 – 10/31:  $80.00
Youth Membership Renewed after 10/31:  $90.00

The 4-H office will help with the date of enrollment for fee process.

We have two ways to help with the increase of enrollment in our 4-H program.

We are offering prizes to the top three members that bring in new members into your 4-H club by December 31st!!

Second way to increase enrollment is the Open house and movie night.  We need everyone helping to make this work.

We have a committee that has been hard at work on the 4-H Open House & Movie Night event.  This idea came about to help show case the great benefits 4-H families provide the community.

Our goal is to increase our 4-H membership to help promote 4-H in our community. See the news letter

4-H Newsletter 10-2-18

Dear 4-H Families,

We are off to the races with the San Benito County Fair starting today. The kids have worked, so hard to get the animals and 4-H youth still exhibits ready for fair. We are proud of all the kids in our 4-H program for all their hard work and efforts.

We have experienced many leaders and parents having disagreements with each other starting at the Monterey fair.  The disagreements have grown while continuing to San Benito Fair time.  We have to remember this 4-H program is one big family with many different personalities.  We all have one thing in common, the children's best interest at heart.

When you chose to argue with another 4-H leader and 4-H parent you are effecting your child and the other children in our 4-H program in a negative and stressful way. It effect the performance of our 4-H youth in the livestock show ring and outside the show ring.  These children deserve the respect from the leader and parents to conduct themselves in a respectable matter at fair and 4-H events.

We all started our children in 4-H to teach them to work together as a team, build life skills and give back to the community.  By us as adults arguing with each other, we are causing a great deal of stress with bad examples of behavior in front of our children and other children in the 4-H program.  Let stop this bad behavior now and put our disagreement to the side for the greater good.

We would also like to Welcome our new 4-H council officers"

We look forward to seeing you at the 4-H council meeting.

Last reminder the livestock exhibitor training is being held on Saturday at Bolado Park.  If you have not attended the exhibitors training last year you will need to attend this meeting to be eligiable to show at the San Benito fair.  If you have attend the training prior at Monterey or Santa Cruz fair this year you are good!

If you are showing at Santa Cruz County fair you will have to attend one of the 3 training that was offered by the fairs.  Regardless if you have completed the livestock exhibitor training last year.

I would also suggest checking the fair book to answer any additional question on the livestock training questions.  It will be listed online in the premium book under the livestock section.

Proposed 4-H Council Investment Changes

Motion from council meeting for investment changes to our Georgia Wapple Frazier Endowment

In July we were contacted by Northern Trust, the management company that cares for the funds we hold in the George Wapple Frazier Endowment (currently $1.8 million). They are recommending that we completely change the way we are invested.  A motion was passed at the August 27th Council meeting to follow their recommendations. We will be voting (and all are encouraged to be there) on this motion at the September 18th council meeting.  This letter is to explain the current investments, proposed changes, and why it is in our benefit to follow the recommendations of Northern Trust.

We pay Northern Trust to watch our investments and keep them at a growth vs. income level that we choose (meaning that we want the most income possible without going over a certain, pre-determined risk level).  The amount we pay them for their services varies year by year based on the value of our funds.  They estimate that we will pay $13,000 this year (and that is a discounted rate we get because we’ve been with them for so long).

We are invested in a combination of individual stocks (many picked by the youth in 4H when the trust was initially set up) such as McDonalds, Starbucks, Kohls, Disney, Nike, Apple, Twitter along withmutual funds, and bonds.  In addition to the fees we pay to Northern Tr

Youth Still Exhibits at 2017 San Benito County Fair

It has come to our attention that there is some miss-information about the 4-H entries at the Fair.  Let’s clear things up.

This year the Fair has made some changes.  We will be displaying your 4-H still exhibits in the building that was formerly the Floriculture Building.  As usual each club will take turns hosting the building.  The list is below.  It is also listed in the Premium Book.

There has been some concern voiced about the security of your entries after fair hours, as well as some concerns about the dust settling on your entries.   The building does lock but as you may know some of the walls are constructed out of lattice.  It is our understanding that the lattice will be covered with plastic which will keep down some of the dust and make the building a little more secure. The Fair also has employees patrolling the fairgrounds ensuring livestock as well as still entries are safe.

Hearing your concerns, a decision has been made to allow members to enter their items in the building, have them judged and then take them home and not have them displayed.  We will let you know what day pick up will be for those entries when you drop them off.  This solution should alleviate your safety concerns while still meeting the Fair requirement of all livestock exhibitors entering a still exhibit.

Important Dates to Remember:

Entry Due: Friday, Sept. 8, 2017

Receiving: Sat Sept. 23, 2017 and Sun Sept. 24, 2017 10:00 to 3:00 p.m.

Special Update: Budget and Behavior

Dear San Benito County 4-H Community,

It has come to my attention that there is a lot of grumbling, fingerprinting and ill-will circulating in our program relative to the work of the 4-H sustainability committee. As such, I want to clear the air about mis-conceptions and remind everyone of the code of conduct that applies to all members and adults in the program.

The sustainability committee was appointed by Council President Mike Mansmith to seek input and develop a 4-H Council spending plan in order to manage the Georgia Wapple Fraiser Trust for future generations. In working with our fiscal managers at Northern Trust it was determined that we needed to reduce our annual spending by $20,000 to meet our sustainability goals. The committee - made up by a representative from every 4-H club and chaired by 4-H Council Treasurer Rachel Taylor have been working to modify the budget and come up with livable options.  The committee has kept the Council informed of their progress via Council meetings, the electronic Updates and by seeking input from all throughout the process.

While not in attendance at the April Council meeting, I have come to learn that several concerns were raised about the proposed budget and that disparaging, hurtful and inappropriate remarks have continued to be made about the process, individuals and families in our program via social media and other contexts. This is not how we do business, and I expect this to stop.  4-H prides itself on creating a safe environment for productive discourse and this behavior is quite contrary to this belief.

As you all prepare to attend the sustainability committee meeting Monday May 8 (7PM at the Vets Building) and to vote on the 2017-2018 Council budget at the May 22nd 4-H Council meeting, I urge everyone to be mindful of the code of conduct, to treat everyone with respect and to work towards a manageable solution for all.

Additionally, I&rsquo

Security Volunteers Needed for Pancake Breakfast

Dear 4-H Community,

We have recently been reminded of the need to provide two security guards for the duration of the 4-H Pancake Breakfast on Sunday, April 23rd at Bolado Park.

While the committee and I are attempting to work with the University of California to hire a local security company to meet this requirement, there is a possibility that the University will not have enough time to complete the process prior to the event.  Therefore, Bolado Park will graciously allow us to meet the security requirement through volunteers.

As such, we are looking for the following:

  • Two volunteers per time frame
  • Volunteers must be currently employed in law enforcement (Sheriff, Police, and Highway Patrol) or by a security company
  • Must provide proof of employment
  • Uniform while volunteering is not necessary
  • Do not need to be certified 4-H volunteers
  • Free breakfast provided

If you or anyone you know are willing to help us meet the security needs of this event, please have them contact Lynn Schmitt-McQuitty at lschmittmcquitty@ucanr.edu

Thanks everyone!

Support Flood Victims

Hi All,

The San Benito County Office of Emergency Services indicates that the best way to help the victims of the flood is through donations.  All four Hollister Fire Stations are accepting cash and gift cards.

Please keep in mind that 4-H has a list of Do’s and Don’ts regarding cash that you need to be mindful of:

Don’ts:

  1. Collect cash from people outside of the 4-H program.
  2. Give cash donations as a 4-H club, project, or Council.

Do’s:

  1. Collect cash donations from within 4-H (with a Receipt) to purchase needed materials/supplies (NO ALCOHOL OR TOBACCO PRODUCTS).

Thanks for doing your part to help the members of our community.

Help Needed for Families Impacted by Flood

Good morning Lynn,

I am a past community club leader, Fairview, and County Council member.  I am a member of the San Benito Co Search and Rescue and have been involved in the rescue, and now distribution of drinking water, to our county residents affected by the flooding.

Spring Grove school has, as I understand, volunteered as a drop off and distribution point for donations.  SAR and the Sheriff's Office can not handle running a donation event, but these are great public relations.

Would our 4-H ers be interested in organizing to receive and distribute donations of clothing, blankets, towels, non-perishable food and waters, and pet food, for our residents?

OES and I await your response.  Please call for additional information.  Thanks so much!

Youth Leadership and Recognition Meeting Notes

On October 14, 2015 4-H volunteers from around the county came together to offer input and insight on the current 4-H member leadership and recognition opportunities we offer related to Record Books, All-Stars and Scholarships and Awards.

*Click here* to read the meeting notes, get involved and add to the conversation.

Next steps include:

o   Review and share information with families and members in your club - perhaps at your next club meeting.

o   Gather additional data and comments from your memberships about the current process and future opportunities.

o   Identify representatives from your club to work on each of the identified opportunities through the respective county-wide committees:

  • Record Book – Record Book Committee
  • All-Stars – Incentives and Recognition Committee
  • Scholarships and Awards - Incentives and Recognition Committee

o   Attend the county-wide committee orientation on Wednesday, January 6th at 7pm in the Vets Building in room 218.

For more information or to add to the conversation, contact Youth Development Advisor Lynn Schmitt-McQuitty at lschmittmcquitty@ucanr.edu

Update on Bill Coates

Hello everyone,

For those of you who have not heard, Bill Coates, a long-time 4-H project leader in our county, developed a brain tumor which, having been biopsied yesterday, was found to be fast growing and very aggressive. He will have a second surgery today (4:20 PM). Nancy and the twins are with him at the hospital; and Ryan is arriving today.

Please be thinking of Bill and the family today. When more information is received, it will be sent to all.

Thank you,

Emily Whiteley
